Introduction: More Than Words on a Plaque

Every Rotarian knows the Four-Way Test. We recite it at meetings. It hangs on our walls. We know it by heart — four questions, twenty-four words. But how often do we pause, in the heat of a committee debate or when replying to a stakeholder’s difficult email, and truly apply it?

This article is an invitation — a practical, honest, and hopefully inspiring look at how we, as members of the Rotary Club of Petaling Jaya, can bring the Four-Way Test to life in our everyday interactions. Not as an abstract ethical code, but as a living compass for how we communicate, collaborate, and lead.

The Four-Way Test at a Glance

Developed in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor, the Four-Way Test was adopted by Rotary International in 1943. It asks us to consider four things about everything we think, say, or do:

Is it the TRUTH?

Clarity, transparency, fact-checking and ethical behaviour in every word we say and decision we make.

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Inclusion, empathy, acceptance, belonging and accountability — seeing all perspectives.

Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS?

Trust, doing good, feeling good and having fun — creating lasting bonds.

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Creative trade-offs and better decisions that lead to mutually satisfying, sustainable solutions.

Simple. Powerful. And deeply relevant in our modern, fast-paced world — perhaps more than ever.

1. In Our Communication with Fellow Members

Our club is our community. The relationships we build within RCPJ form the foundation of everything we do beyond it. The Four-Way Test gives us a framework for communicating with honesty, fairness, and goodwill — even when we disagree.

IS IT THE TRUTH? — Honest, Transparent Communication

When we speak at meetings, share updates on WhatsApp groups, or give feedback on a project proposal, are we being fully truthful? This means:

  • Sharing facts, not assumptions. If you are unsure, say so.
  • Distinguishing between your personal opinion and verified information.
  • Being transparent when there are challenges, not just sharing good news.

A club built on honest communication is a club where members feel safe to contribute ideas, raise concerns, and grow together.

IS IT FAIR? — Inclusive Voices, Equitable Decisions

Fairness in member communication means ensuring every voice has space. Before concluding a committee decision, ask: have we heard from members who might see this differently? Fairness also means:

  • Giving credit where it is due.
  • Not letting the loudest voice dominate.
  • Being accountable when we make mistakes, rather than deflecting.
WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL? — Keeping Friendships Strong

Rotary friendships are among the most enduring in the world. Let us protect them. Before sending that curt message or making a sharp remark in a meeting, ask: will this build or erode goodwill? Small acts of appreciation — a thank-you note, acknowledging someone’s effort publicly — go a long way.

2. In Our Projects and Project Planning

Projects are where Rotary’s values are most visibly tested. The Four-Way Test is not just an ethical guide — it is also a practical project management tool.

IS IT THE TRUTH? — Doing Our Homework

Before launching a project, are we grounded in the real needs of the community we want to serve? The Four-Way Test calls us to collect information, apply critical thinking, and know the difference between facts and assumptions. This means:

  • Conducting genuine needs assessments, not assuming we know what a community needs.
  • Being honest in our project evaluations — including when something did not work.
  • Sharing accurate progress reports with the board and members.
IS IT FAIR? — Designing for All Beneficiaries

Fairness in projects requires us to use empathy to see other points-of-view. Who benefits from this project? Who might be left out? Are we working with the community or doing something to them? Consider:

  • Involving beneficiaries in the design and feedback process.
  • Ensuring project resources are allocated equitably.
  • Thinking about long-term sustainability, not just event-day success.
WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL? — Leaving a Lasting Impression

Every project is also a statement about who we are as a club. Are our projects conducted with respect and openness? Do we create an environment where even tough questions are welcomed? A project that builds genuine goodwill — one where beneficiaries, partners, and volunteers all feel respected — is one that creates lasting impact.

WILL IT BE BENEFICIAL? — Sustainable, Scalable Impact

The fourth test asks us to think beyond the immediate. Will this project produce solutions that are sustainable and scalable? Are we making decisions that benefit all parties — including our club’s resources and reputation? Use ‘what if’ scenario planning and think through trade-offs carefully before committing.

In Our Interactions with Visitors and Guests

Visitors to our meetings — whether prospective members, dignitaries, or community guests — form their impression of Rotary through us. The Four-Way Test shapes how we welcome, present, and engage.

Truth and Transparency with Visitors

Be honest about who we are and what we do. Avoid overselling or making commitments we cannot keep. If a visitor asks a hard question about Rotary or our club, answer with integrity rather than a polished script.

Fairness and Inclusion

A visitor should feel genuinely welcomed — regardless of their background, profession, or perceived influence. Fairness means giving every visitor the same warmth and attention, not just the ones who might bring connections or resources.

Goodwill as First Impression

The atmosphere we create when a visitor walks through our door — or joins our virtual meeting — reflects our club’s culture. A warm introduction, genuine curiosity about their work, and a follow-up message all signal that we are a club worth joining.

4. In Our Work with Project Members and Stakeholders

Our projects involve a wide web of relationships — NGO partners, government agencies, corporate sponsors, volunteers, and community leaders. The Four-Way Test is essential in navigating these relationships with integrity.

Truth with Stakeholders — No Surprises

Stakeholder relationships thrive on transparency. Share challenges early. If a project is running behind schedule or over budget, communicate proactively. Stakeholders who are kept in the loop — even with difficult news — become long-term partners.

Fairness in Collaboration

Partnerships must be equitable. Are all parties’ contributions acknowledged? Are decisions made collaboratively? Fairness also means honouring commitments, even when circumstances make it inconvenient.

Beneficial to All — Mutually Satisfying Outcomes

The best stakeholder relationships are those where all parties feel they have gained something meaningful. Frame conversations around shared goals. Look for solutions that are not just good for us, but transformative for all involved. As the Four-Way Test reminds us, these are the answers that are sustainable and scalable.

Putting It Into Practice: A Simple Daily Habit

We do not need a committee meeting to apply the Four-Way Test. Here is a simple habit: before sending an important message, making a key decision, or starting a difficult conversation, pause for thirty seconds and ask the four questions.

You may find that the message you were about to send fails the first test. Or that you had not considered the impact on one of the parties involved. That thirty-second pause can save relationships, protect the club’s reputation, and lead to better outcomes.

A Call to Our RCPJ Family

Fellow Rotarians, we are proud members of one of the world’s most respected service organisations. Our Petaling Jaya community looks to us not only for our projects but for our character. The Four-Way Test gives us a shared language for that character.

Let us challenge ourselves this year: to recite the Four-Way Test not just at meetings, but to live it — in every email, every project decision, every handshake with a new partner, and every conversation with a fellow member.
