PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

More than 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water and related to this fact is that 2.5 billion people lack access to improved sanitation. Safe drinking water is so necessary as 70% of our body requires fluid. Rotary needs to address this issue more vehemently. It is a human right. The right to consume clean water is like the right to a good education. The incoming RI President had made it his priority to look into water and sanitation.

Our Club recognizes the need to examine more seriously the water woes of our community. In fact some years ago we did a project in ‘save our rivers’ that is in consonant with water. In the next Rotary year, there is a water project in the pipeline. PE Eric and the Director of Service Projects, Rtn Koh Kia Heong and the Chairman of New Projects, PDG Dato’ Dr Low Teong have planned to do a recce to Sungkai to look into the water problem of an Orang Asli village. With advanced technology, people do not have to suffer the dilemma of dirty water.

The increasing number of children suffering from fatal diseases such as cancer and kidney failure could be attributed to unhygienic consumption of water. Of course, other causes are apparent like eating habits. But we need to give a chance to our children to enjoy clean refreshing water. With so much development today, villages are unable to rely on rivers for the supply of water. If this project is successful, it will be the forerunner of our Club to implement the RCPJ’s water project nationwide.

EDITORIAL
by Eric Wong
An educationist commented that we need to put sports in our children’s education system. It is indeed very true. Today, our children do not have the balance between studies and sports. The fault lies with the parents who want their children to get as many As as possible. It is the rat race. But come to think of it, the more successful people today were former sportsmen and women. They are still into sports.

Parents do not understand the values and benefits that can be received through sports and games. These activities mould children’s character. The challenge, the perseverance, the dedication, the mental aspects and above all, the exercise to keep our bodies fit and strong. Today, when I meet some of my students, most of them look good physically and they always have to urge and motivation to go at life. There must be something in sports and games that have prepared them to face these challenges.

We need to bring back sports and games to the schools, even at the primary level. There must be support from the principals and teachers. The schools could even employ professionals to train the students in the various sports and games, acknowledging that there is little expertise in teachers training the students. Fewer men are now into the teaching profession. This is not a loss but a benefit for a child.

THE WEEK WE SHARED
Rtn Raymond Goh talked about printing this week. With many years of experience in this business, he gave us insights into the intricacies of printing.

Printing is a process for reproducing text and image, typically with ink on paper using a printing press. There are many types of techniques in printing. Offset printing is a widely used printing technique where the inked image is transferred or offset from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the printing surface. Digital printing is another technique. Professional digital printing primarily uses an electrical charge toner or liquid ink.

Raymond also talked about printing according to customized requirements. For example, the McDonald packets could be printed and cut according to the shape. There were questions asked about why there are errors in printing such as bank notes. The only explanation according to Raymond has to do with the human factor.

Thank you Raymond for sharing with us your knowledge in printing.
