PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The month of April is a busy month. There will be much travelling. I’m so glad that our Rotarians have responded positively to our activities and projects.

The RCPJ Closed will be held from 3rd to 4th April in Tawau. This is an annual golf tournament for members of our Club. The trophy is called the OSS named after our donor, PP Ong See Seng. We have made arrangements for at least more than 10 Rotarians to fly by AirAsia. This will be a good time to fellowship. This is an activity that our members look forward to, especially the keen golfers.

The Golden Child Project is scheduled between 10th and 12th April at A’Formosa, Malacca. It is the Club’s pride to reach out to the terminally-stricken leukemia children by giving them a weekend of joy and fun. More than 10 Rotarians and Anns will be participating in this project that has attracted our partner clubs, the RC of Hong Kong Island West and the RC of Tampin. Please join in the fun in this beneficial project by contacting Rtn Pua or PP Michael Toh.

The 75th Rotary International District 3300 Assembly will be held from the 17th to the 19th of April at the MS Garden Hotel, Kuantan. It is expected to draw at least 300 participants. At the moment, our Club has representation from Rtn Margaret Soo, PE Dr Eric Wong and I. PDG David Ho and PDG Dato’ Dr Low Teong are likely to be present. There’s still time to participate. You can get the forms from our PE.

And the last activity for our Club in the month of April is the anniversary celebration of our sister-club, Hong Kong Island West. It will be held from the 25th April to the 27th April. More than 20 Rotarians and Anns have registered for this function that promises much hospitality from our sister-club.

Thank you Rotarians and Anns for your kind support.

EDITORIAL
by Eric Wong
The Four-Way Test was developed 75 years ago and it is ticking. There is such a hunger for ethics today. Why is it so? When something goes wrong, such as an Enron, or political scandals, ethics is on the front page. However, much of the ethics conversation today is not really about ethics, but the minimal requirements of following the law. Ethics is the foundation for law. Humans have an inherent drive for self-promotion or self-interest. If we can get away with something, we will try. It is organizations like Rotary that call us to a higher standard. Sometimes they just can’t tell the difference between right and wrong.

The biggest ethical dilemma, since time immemorial, is the conflict of interest. People tend to lose perspective when they have a personal stake in the outcome, and that’s when they begin to make bad decisions.

Got ethics?

Work right, play nice, and sleep tight.

Excerpts from Rotarian Sept. 2007

THE WEEK WE SHARED
PDG Dato Dr Low Teong was the guest speaker. He shared his personal experiences and observations of visits made by RI officials, Directors and Presidents in the past. Many RI Presidents have visited Kuala Lumpur and the arrangements that have to be made to receive them have been very painstakingly detailed, including accommodation and protocol. Low Teong should know; he was aide to Past RI President Richard King.

While many RI representatives have been good ambassadors for Rotary there have been the exceptions who have displayed loftiness, arrogance, insensitivity and behaviour unbecoming of Rotarians. One example cited was the rudeness of a past President who abruptly left a conference session while the Malaysian Minister of Tourism was speaking! He also had the gall to demand manicure and pedicure services! An interesting insight is that presents, gifts, souvenirs and letters given to past RI Presidents may have even landed in rubbish bins!

The ostensible objective of an RI President's visit is to promote Rotary and to meet the constituency. In practice, not many get to meet the President as the visit tends to be very short and only a select few directly involved in organising the visit get the opportunity.
