PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The month of February is a busy month for Rotarians and Anns. It is a month of celebrations for the Chinese New Year that falls on the 14th of February. It is also a month of Rotary commitment. In Rotary, we still try to accommodate our schedule despite family life and social obligation.

On the 6th of February, the Interactors of Sri Aman completed a community project. It was the spring cleaning of the Beautiful Gate Home in SS2. 15 Interactors did a marvellous job in cleaning the home and the one adjacent to it. Armed with brooms, mops, rags and detergent, the young ladies cleaned the home from the ceiling to the floor. This was indeed a worthwhile project in which they showed they cared for the disabled who are unable to do much cleaning. The Interactors responded to a call by the home to do some cleaning before the Chinese New Year. For all the effort, IPP Dato’ Kevin treated them to pizza. PDG Dato’ Dr Low Teong sponsored the cleaning materials.

On Saturday, 20th of February, our Rotarians and Anns will be hosting a Pot Luck Lunch at the Beautiful Gate Home in conjunction with the Chinese New Year. The response is very encouraging as more than 40 Rotarians and Anns have promised to be present. It will be a good time to meet up during the Chinese New Year. There was no luncheon on the 16th of February. It will also be a time to care for people – people who are less fortunate than us. The opportunity to give is a blessing. Thank you Rtn Rianne and Ann Elsie for organizing this social event.

Tuesday, 23rd February is an important evening. It will be our International Nite held at the Grand Dorsett. We’ll have a chance to savour Dutch cuisine and wine. It will also be an evening for us to know about the Netherlands. I was informed that the participation for the evening may not be encouraging because some Rotarians are committed to another function. But please try to support our Club. We’ve always had great International Nites!

Wednesday, 23rd February will be a morning called a joint cheer between SJKR (C) Sungei Way and SJK (T) Sungei Way. This cheer is held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year. In the past, we had individual cheer programmes. This year we wanted to have only one cheer programme instead of 4. But the idea could not materialize because of the difficulty in agreeing to a common date. So this has turned out to be a joint cheer.

Saturday, 6th of March will be the International Nite of Rotary for World Peace. It will be held at the Royale Chulan in K.L. at 7.00 p.m. Our PHF donors, Shashi, Kevin, Kia Heong and I and David, Swee Fatt, LT and Chris will represent our Club. We still need 2 more Rotarians to participate in this event.

Thank you Rotarians and Anns for working towards the good of humanity.

EDITORIAL
by PDG Dato Dr Low Teong
The club’s Golden Jubilee Celebration must certainly be the most important event in the club calendar for the coming year. The Organising Committee had a meeting on Tuesday 9 December 2010 at the Kelab Golf Negara Subang. It was hopefully a watershed meeting. A few contentious issues were discussed and decided upon.

The first issue was the Souvenir gift we give to our guests for the evening. There was a suggestion that the updated History Book of the club be used as the gift. Others on the committee disagreed. After the views of all present were heard it was put to a vote. The Organising Committee voted not to use the history book as the gift. With that decision we hope the subject will not be brought up again so that the committee tasked with recommending a suitable gift can work on it.

The other issue was whether we should invite the Presidents and spouses of Rotary Clubs in the Klang Valley. Most if not all clubs in the Klang Valley and beyond have invited our Presidents to their Anniversary celebrations over the years. One member proposed that we request the Presidents of the clubs in the Klang Valley to purchase tickets to attend our Golden Jubilee celebration. Over and above we were going to request them to purchase tables for their members and take up advertisements. Thank goodness the Organising Committee took the realistic decision to invite them as proposed.

With the above two issues settled the budget presented to the Club Assembly was adopted by the OC. The Resolutions to effect the collection of the RM1000.00 levy from all members and to require every member to be responsible for RM500.00 of advertisement will be tabled for adoption at our regular meeting on 9 March 2010. It should be easily passed.

With the adoption of the resolutions on 9 March 2010 all the preliminary preparations and planning will be in place. We appeal to all members of the club who have ideas or suggestions to make the Golden Jubilee a better event to present it to the OC so that they can be discussed openly and decisions made. Certainly we hope that the events and the program that has now been agreed upon by the OC will not be brought up by anyone for review. Suggestions to improve its implementation will certainly be welcomed.

The club and the OC can now channel all its time and resources to the organization of the actual events. The portfolio of the club members in the OC was also adopted on the 9 February 2010 meeting. The list is published in this issue of the PeeJay Pos.

The updating of the history book under PP Dr Tarcisius Chin will take time. Club Presidents from 1998-1999 onwards will need to provide Tarcisius with all the necessary information and documents to facilitate his work. All the Presidents except PDG Dato AP Perumal are still in the club.

Another priority is the invitation of our Royal Patron, DYMM Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, the Sultan of Selangor. This is the club’s Golden Jubilee and there should be a very good chance that Tuanku will accept our invitation. Needless to say Tuanku’s presence on 6 January 2011 will add tremendous prestige to the event. But we need to work fast so that Tuanku is given plenty of time to decide on our invitation. We must all get help from fellow Rotarians that enjoy a close relationship with Tuanku to help us.

The Golden Jubilee celebrations is a celebration of the club and its members. Every effort should be made to get every able member of the club involved in some aspects of the organization of the event so that at the end of the day every member can claim ownership to the success of the celebrations.

THE WEEK WE SHARED
The speaker for today was PDG David Ho, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Yayasan Kelab Kelab Rotary Malaysia (Yayasan) who stood in for the regular speaker Mr CY Wong.

Yayasan which was incorporated as a Public Company Limited by Guarantee was established on 24th September 1985 with all the Past District Governors as members.

Its many objectives include disaster relief, helping the poor and needy, educational assistance and relief of human sufferings. It has carried out many humanitarian and educational projects by itself and with Rotary clubs in Malaysia over the years.

The funds of the Yayasan comes from contributions by individual Rotarians, Rotary clubs, surpluses from District events and fund raising activities. Rotarians and clubs who contribute to the Yayasan are recognised by various awards.

PP Dato Kevin Yong contributed RM4000.00 to become a Patron after the address. PP Datuk Abdul Rahman Ramli agreed to contribute RM4000.00 after the meeting. PP Teo Woon Hud and Rtn Olivia Lim agreed to become Patrons. Many other Rotarians agreed to make a contribution.

Rotary quote of the day presented by PDG Dato Dr Low Teong:

The first contribution to The Rotary Foundation for USD26.50 was made in 1918. The money was the surplus from the 1918 Kansas City Convention.

Significant contributions were received in 1947 upon the death of Paul Harris as memorial gifts to honour our founder.
