EDITORIAL
by Eric Wong
Public figures that include civil servants, politicians, care-givers, teachers, etc. must be squeaky clean. They are expected to live a very moral life and they have never done anything wrong. I must also add that they have a high sense of integrity which means that they are honest and firm in their moral principles and judgment.

The constant news reports in the local dailies about some public figures are depressing. They are involved in acts that cast doubts over their moral values. They become the talk of town and banter of jokes among the town folk. Rightly so, ordinary people have high expectations of their leaders. They put them on a pedestal. People become disappointed and disillusioned when these public figures let them down.

What I don’t understand is that the people who have shadows of doubt in their characters or past misdemeanour still want to stand for office. Don’t they have a self-monitoring mechanism? I should strongly suggest that people who want to hold public office must undergo a screen test on moral values before their names are put up. I’m sure there are lots more people who are clean and worthy to hold public office.

I think moral values are important in a society so that we are not criticized and be made targets of ridicule.

THE WEEK WE SHARED
Have you taken a shower in mid-air? Not an ordinary shower but one spiced with luxury and comfort. You can only do it on AirBus A 380. This was the little episode that PP Tara Singh Gill told our Rotarians on his flight from Dubai to the UK. What an experience!

There was no scheduled speaker this week. But Tara was kind enough to volunteer to talk about his experiences in air travel. But the A380 was something else. The comfort and the service in the business class were unbelievable. But not for a price! I think it was at least RM30,000 for a seat.

Our Rotarians enjoyed the little talk that was delivered in a light-hearted manner. Of course, there were some naughty questions.
