PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
|
|
In my speech for the 48th Anniversary Charity Fund-raising, I spoke about the need to reach out to people. We may not be able to reach out to the masses of people who need our help. But if we could touch a life of someone, we could have made a difference to his life. A little kindness, a few words of comfort and sympathy or a simple meal to show we care would make all the difference for that someone who is so deprived. Let us care more for people and children in our midst, especially in these challenging times. Our Cheer Programs are directed towards this vacuum in the lives of so many.
I also spoke about the need to touch people from our hearts, not through our minds. In this, we are able to feel and to remember what we do. Our action should not be mechanical but a spontaneous action from our hearts. Rotarians from our Club are care-givers who do things with compassion and feeling. We not only care for others, we also care for our members and Anns. We have a care-group that visits our elderly Rotarians, especially during festive times. In this Chinese New Year, let us be generous and reach out to others.
PENNY AND I WISH ALL THOSE WHO CELEBRATE THE CHINESE NEW YEAR ‘KONG HEE FATT CHOY’. AND TO THE OTHER ROTARIANS, A HAPPY HOLIDAY.

EDITORIAL
by Eric Wong |
| The Chinese New Year is a time when traditional values are seen to be practised. Children still go home to their parents’ homes even though they work and live far away. In China, there’s this annual exodus back to the country homes. I think it’s the respect for our parents. The re-union dinner is a must where children and grandchildren come together. But today, this value seems to be eroding. Perhaps because of practical reasons, not all children come home today and this reunion thing is being threatened.
I have also observed that the restaurants in the Klang Valley are packed for the reunion. It seems to suggest that times have changed. Our parents no longer do the cooking for their children, Rightly so, age is catching up. And the children are doing well in life and they can afford to eat out. It is sad that traditions are slowly being eroded.

| THE
WEEK WE SHARED |
|
Mr Michael Hawke of the Rotary Club of Colchester Centurion shared with us his Club and the town of Colchester. Colchester has 16 churches, 1 mosque and 3 golf clubs. It is Britain’s oldest recorded town and its name is German.
Michael is a regular visitor to Malaysia. He is married to a Malaysian. He first became involved in Rotary when he was with the Hospice. That could have touched him to do charity for the needy.
Michael later presented RM5,000 to our GOSM and gifts to the home.
