PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

November is Rotary Foundation Month. “The purpose of The Rotary Foundation is to assure us of Rotary in perpetuity … that we may continue to serve all humanity in the interests of permanent world peace …” (Arch Klumph).

The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. The Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation supported by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.

Every amount contributed to The Rotary Foundation is spent in support of humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs and their operations. Clubs and districts apply for and receive Foundation grants to carry out worthy projects worldwide.

Funds Contributions to Rotary Foundation funds enable Rotarians to carry out humanitarian and educational projects. The TRF has Annual Programs Fund, EREY, Permanent Fund, PolioPlus Fund and Share

I urge all our Rotarians to contribute towards these funds, especially the EREY and the PHF. Thank you.

EDITORIAL
by Eric Wong

The DG’s visit to our Club strengthened the camaraderie among our Rotarians. It is time that our Club needs some boosting. The Club Assembly, the meeting with the Interactors and Rotaractors and the fellowship dinner were opportunities for our Rotarians to relax and to talk about matters that we should share in Rotary. These are good opportunities to listen to each other in a non-formal setting. Meetings make us too defensive and sensitive.

DG Dr Rajindar Singh and the First Lady Surendra Kaur were well accepted by our Rotarians and Anns. They were indeed comfortable in socializing with our members. The DG touched on some issues of our Club. He was a little concerned about our ‘aging Club.’ Perhaps we need to recruit new members, especially lady members to match the figure of about 60 members ten years ago. The DG was particularly proud of our Interactors whom he met in the afternoon. The Interactors were well informed about Rotary and they were passionate about Interact.

DG, thank you for visiting our Club. We wish you and your Ann well for the rest of your Rotary year.

SPEAKER OF THE WEEK
How to Get MORE than What Your FD is Paying You

With an inflation rate of more than 8% in the current economy, it is no longer wise to put money in a fixed deposit only to yield an interest of less than 4%. Our guest speaker shared some tips on how to get more returns in your investment to ensure at least 5% to 6% yield.

Ms. Vivian Tan is Assistant Vice President of CIMB Private Banking. She introduced 4 types of instruments for those who want to get more from their investment as our purchasing power is decreasing. The 4 instruments are:

  1. Foreign Currency Investment by foreign currency deposit a/c which enables us to have higher FD rates compared to Ringgit deposit
  2. Dual Currency Investment (DCI) - One of the hottest investment tools that allows us to get foreign currency at the cheaper conversion rate (compared to money changers) at the same time earning annualized yield of as high as 80% p.a .
  3. Fixed Income or Bond - An instrument that yields higher return with marginally higher risk than FD
  4. Bull Equity-Linked Investment (BULL ELI) - An instrument which allows us to buy a list of shares that are listed at Bursa, SGX, HK at cheaper price. The discount can be as low as 15% discount lower than market price.

Each of the 4 instruments introduced comes with a unique character, risks and returns. There is a different stroke for each different folk. Best is to have a private advisory session with Vivian at 019-755-1733, an experienced accounting major qualified from Murdoch University, Western Australia.

  3. If you do NOT have a Girl Friend - You are missing SOME thing in your life. If you HAVE a Girl Friend - You are missing EVERY thing in your life.

  4. Question : When do you CONGRATULATE someone for their MISTAKE. Answer : On their MARRIAGE..

  5. When your LIFE is in DARKNESS, PRAY to GOD and ask him to free you from Darkness. Even after you pray, if you are still in Darkness - Please PAY the ELECTRICITY BILL.
