PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I’m still thinking of the Rotary quote of the day at our luncheon meeting on the 18th of August. It’s meaningful and has made me more committed to our Club’s projects and I’m sure it has also impacted our Rotarians to search themselves on why they are in Rotary. Allow me to repeat the quote:

“I am not a Rotarian just because I have accepted an invitation to become a member of my club. I will only be a Rotarian when I fulfill the obligation deriving from that membership.”
PRID Aart Jan de Boef, Director Rotary International, 1985-87

The basic ideal of a Rotarian is to serve the community. And we Rotarians must not lose sight of this reality. I’m indeed very happy to note and observe that our members are feverishly involved in the new projects and activities. Thank you so very much for coming forward to assist our club and our community. The membership committee is responding to the call to increase our number to 50 by this Rotary year. There are activities in the pipeline that include interest meetings and the publishing of our Club’s brochure highlighting what we do for our community. The TRF committee is going round to members to top up their EREY and increase the number of PHFs. The Public Relations committee is working closely with the Membership Committee to come out with strategies to woo potential members. They will soon move into the corporate sector to talk about Rotary.

The Service Projects Committee has been tasked with new projects and at the same time maintains the projects over the years as they have been beneficial to the community. The Water & Sanitation Project at Sungai Chawang is on track. We’ve made two trips to the Orang Asli Settlement. The boring of the well had been completed and our Club is looking into a pump and the pipes that can connect to the 30 homes.

The project on Redeeming Human Dignity is also on track. Next week, the Club will interview and select 8 potential beneficiaries from a list of 21 from the NKF to train them in culinary skills. The training will commence in early September. The Rea-da-book project will commence in September when the custom-made tables are ready. Our Rotarians are already generously donating books and magazines for this project. The Band for the Physically Challenged will take off soon when we have purchased the musical instruments. There’s also much discussion on the Special Child Project and the 1Malaysia Cheer.

Our Charity Drive will target RM30,000 for our Club’s Funds. The Dama Musical Show will be staged on the 18th of October. The Committee has already targeted the sales of tickets and the marketing of the tickets will commence next week.

Our Newsletter is right on schedule. Members are getting them on time. For the 12 who are not so computer savvy, we’re sending hard copies to them. Our luncheon meetings are indeed encouraging. The attendance is impressive and we’ve lots of visiting Rotarians and guests who turn up for our meetings. This, I’m sure, has been prompted by our interesting speakers.

The momentum is on. Let us keep this up. I’m absolutely thankful that our Rotarians are coming forward to be true Rotarians in the spirit of giving. You’ve justified yourselves to be Rotarians. Thank you.

THE WEEK WE SHARED

The Speaker today was Rtn Dr Raymond Tan of the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja. He spoke on a wide range of topics like snoring, obesity and sleep apnea, which are medically related.

Mark Twain said, “There is a use for everything except snoring.” Unfortunately, the majority of adults snore, either just as an irritating noise to their sleeping partner when we are tired or it maybe a killer if it is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

OSA occurs when the upper airways collapse intermittently and repeatedly during sleep. There is a 10-second breathing pause and ventilation is reduced by 50%. The common symptoms are excessive daytime sleepiness, restless sleep, change in personality, anxiety, depression, irritability, forgetfulness, change in personality etc.

The consequences are worsening relationship with spouse, impotency, reduced alertness when driving, susceptible to heart diseases, daytime sleepiness and depression.

Rotary quote of the day contributed by Rtn Rianne Chin:

“Rotarians are and must be people of a certain caliber, people with the capacity to do great deeds, the sense to do them wisely, and the strength of character to do them honestly and well.”
John Kenny, President, Rotary International 2009-2010 at the 2009 International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA.
